The key word here is ‘independent’. The ECB•S has no vested interest in how secure a certain brand’s product is, which gives them the freedom to rate each safe precisely to give consumers a better idea of which product suits their needs.
There’s another aspect to certification as well – insurance. If you’re going to take out a policy, your insurance company needs to know that you’re not storing valuables in a place that can be easily compromised. That’s why the ECB•S issues certifications in eight levels, from zero to seven. This is usually combined with a recommended cash rating, to give an accurate representation of how secure a safe is, and how much cash should be stored in it.
