Ensuring Security: Unveiling the Significance of Certified Safes
So, you’re in the market for a high-quality safe. Where do you start? Perhaps this is the first time you’ve purchased one, or maybe it’s just time to upgrade from a model that is out of date and isn’t as secure as you’d like. There’s also the question of what the safe is going to be used for. Is it to protect the assets of your small business, or to store valuables at home? While all of these factors will play a part in the type of safe you choose, there’s one aspect that always needs to be considered – security.
To ensure that your safe is secure enough to protect against various threats such as fire and theft, it’s always best to go for a product that has been certified by an independent assessor.
Your insurance company needs to know that you’re not storing valuables in a place that can be easily compromised.
Why do safes need to be certified?
In years gone by, there were a variety of different standards used to determine how secure a safe was. The problem with this method is that there’s no way to accurately compare products. An alternative solution was needed, and it arrived in the form of independent testing from a few reputable international groups. The largest of these is the European Certification Body or ECB•S, which issues certificates for safes and vaults.
The key word here is ‘independent’. The ECB•S has no vested interest in how secure a certain brand’s product is, which gives them the freedom to rate each safe precisely to give consumers a better idea of which product suits their needs.
There’s another aspect to certification as well – insurance. If you’re going to take out a policy, your insurance company needs to know that you’re not storing valuables in a place that can be easily compromised. That’s why the ECB•S issues certifications in eight levels, from zero to seven. This is usually combined with a recommended cash rating, to give an accurate representation of how secure a safe is, and how much cash should be stored in it.
Purchasing a certified safe
If you have a safe that isn’t certified, or are looking at your options, it’s always best to consult with an expert to make sure you’re choosing the right product for the job. You can look for the ECB•S label on the inside of your safe, which will show how the safe is rated for theft and for fire.
